An Exciting Opportunity for Teens!

NEW APPLICATION DEADLINE: Sunday, May 13th, 11:59pm

A story coaching team will guide 6-10 Muslim teens in writing an original novel-in-stories, inspired by youth observations and experiences, that confronts anti-Muslim discrimination and explores multiple perspectives of American-Muslims. Drafting workshops will be co-led by Shout Mouse Press Founder Kathy Crutcher and award-winning Muslim author Hena Khan. Hena has become a leading voice in the need for increased diversity in children’s literature, and her recent middle-grade novel, Amina’s Voice, has sparked important national conversation about the representation of Muslims in literature for young people.

An Art / Design coach will support 2-3 Muslim teen artists with the creation of compelling illustrations/photography to complement the narrative.  These Muslim youth will receive quality individualized arts education programming as well as essential communications and leadership training.

Once the book is published in Spring 2019, authors will become ambassadors for the book and for their community. They will be invited to read from the book and speak about their experience at book festivals, community events, and in classrooms across Greater Washington.

The Workshop will be held at the VisArts Center in Rockville, Maryland from 10:00AM to 12:30PM for two weeks, Monday through Friday, June 18 to 29, 2018.

Further Revisions: The same leadership team + program participants will gather for up to five 2-hour Revision Workshops throughout the fall to revise content and add material as needed. Workshops will be scheduled according to group availability.

Book Production: Throughout the winter Shout Mouse Press teaching artists and designers will edit, design, and publish a high-quality novel for wide distribution, available Spring 2019.

Shout Mouse Press is a nonprofit writing program and publishing house for unheard voices.

Through writing workshops that lead to professional publication, they empower those from marginalized backgrounds to tell their own stories in their own voices and, as published authors, to act as leaders and agents of change.

This is an exciting opportunity to further the mission of both NWMI and SMP, as we aim to produce a collaborative book project by Muslim youth that builds connections across difference, increases understanding of unheard perspectives, and creates more inclusive communities through youth-led peer engagement.
