Art: A Journey Inward

  • Rollins Congressional Club 1621 Martha Terrace Rockville, MD, 20852 United States (map)
“He sends water from the sky that fills riverbeds to overflowing, each according to its measure. The stream carries on its surface a growing layer of froth, like the froth that appears when people melt metals in the fire to make ornaments and tools: in this way Allah illustrates truth and falsehood—the froth disappears, but what is of benefit to man stays behind—this is how Allah makes illustrations.” — Qur'an 13:17

Come with an open heart and mind and enjoy a tranquil afternoon of meditative remembrance of our Creator as you create a masterpiece of your own!

Our faith has a deeply-rooted tradition of using art as a means of expressing and enhancing spirituality. From intricate calligraphy and geometric patterns adorning mosque walls to beautiful homewares such as carpets and pottery, Islamic art reflects the order and balance of the universe and creates an atmosphere of spiritual harmony and beauty.

To harness this powerful tool, participants will begin with dhikr led by Sr. Pari and then choose one of two guided workshops:

1) Islamic Geometric Pattern Art

Learn how to construct the stunningly symmetrical patterns found in mosques, palaces, and squares throughout the Muslim world. Taught by Saadi Shirazi of Abdul & Saleema Arts.

2) Ebru Water Marbling Art

Practice this meditative and spiritual Turkish art form by manipulating rich pigments on the surface of thickened liquid to create a one-of-a-kind piece. Taught by Nadia Janjua.

All materials are provided and no experience is necessary (ages 12 and up). Space is limited and registration is required. Secure your spot today!
